ChatGPT has taken the world by storm over the past couple of months. Students love it, but teachers hate it. It makes everything more convenient. Everything from writing essays about Shakespearian plays to explaining complex theoretical physics. Some would argue that the chat bot is killing people’s critical thinking and work ethic, but others would say that its arrival was inevitable.
We think it is fair to say that it certainly has its pros and cons. But what if those cons can be taken away? The main flaw in the chatbot is that people find the easy way out and ‘cheat’ through using it. Well a computer science student Edward Tian from Princeton University has developed GPTZero. This uses statistical characteristics to determine whether a text was written by a human or an AI. This program can be ran by teachers or managers to spot those who are opting out of working hard and picking the easy way of doing things. It then still allows the use of gaining knowledge, for example, complex topics can be summarized and in turn be used in essays or articles.
Due to its current hype, GPTZero is heavily overcrowded with users hoping to test its effectiveness.
After testing it out, we think that it is still far from stopping ChatGPT. It is fairly effective at recognizing longer texts but anything under ten lines will not be picked up. It is clear to see that the industry is rapidly advancing and the program will only improve with time and investment so only time will tell whether it can put a stop to ChatGPT.
