A word from Maxwell Stephens' Managing Director, Peter Forshaw...

Let me just start with a big thank you to all of the FM professionals who took part in this survey, helping to make it one of our biggest yet!

FM has always been a dynamic and constantly evolving sector, however this industry’s ability to adapt has been tested more than ever over the last few years. The global pandemic has obviously had a huge impact on many aspects of everyone’s lives, and some of the biggest tectonic shifts have occured in the world of work. From the logistics of where and when people work, to the changing attitudes towards “traditional” office life, COVID-19 has brought about a rapid evolution of the workplace, and FM professionals have had to rapidly evolve alongside it.

From these survey results, as well as our conversations with hundreds of FM professionals and industry leaders, it seems that the events of the past couple of years have been somewhat of a double-edged sword. The pandemic may have brought about numerous challenges for the sector, however it has also put it in the spotlight. There seems to have been a renewed appreciation of the FM function and the impact it has on keeping businesses operational.

Personally, the last few years have reaffirmed why I chose to recruit within the FM industry, and work with the people within it. I have been repeatedly inspired by the resilience, adaptability, and determination that FM professionals have shown, as well as the sheer pace of innovation within the sector. Despite some initial pessimism around the future of the sector, I am thrilled at the volume of new opportunities we are seeing, and although there may still be lots of work to do and obstacles to overcome, I am more than optimistic for the future of FM.

The following report delves into the FM sector, including the demographic makeup of the industry, levels of remuneration, working life, responsibilities, and career attitudes and motivations. As well as providing an in-depth insight into the industry, the information in this report can help you make more informed decisions, whether you’re a candidate looking for the next step in your career, or you’re an employer looking to recruit.

We hope you find this report useful, and as always we welcome all comments and suggestions for ways in which we can further develop our salary survey in the future.
