Background
University College London (UCL) Estates embarked on an ambitious £55 million Masterplan refurbishment project for the Institute of Education (IoE). This initiative aimed to enhance the condition, functionality, and use of space in 20 Bedford Way and surrounding satellite buildings. The project sought to upgrade infrastructure, welfare facilities, and workspace allocation, aligning with UCL’s Future of Work and emerging Estates Strategy and Space Standards.

The Challenge
We faced the task of finding a Project Manager capable of navigating the complexities of this extensive refurbishment. The role required a professional with a successful track record in space and staff planning, health and safety management, and project coordination. The candidate needed to ensure compliance with the Masterplan’s objectives while fostering a collaborative and adaptable approach among the IoE's staff and departments.

The Results
We successfully placed a highly qualified Project Manager who demonstrated expertise in:
• Strategic Space Planning: Effectively managing space allocation and usage across multiple departments, ensuring equitable distribution and adherence to strategic academic requirements.
• Operational Team Leadership: Leading the internal contract compliance team and fostering strong stakeholder relationships to support the Masterplan’s goals.
• Health and Safety Compliance: Implementing and monitoring robust health and safety policies, ensuring alignment with the new model and compliance with statutory requirements.
• Project Coordination: Utilising project management tools to track progress, manage issues, and ensure timely delivery of project milestones.
The appointed Project Manager worked closely with the Masterplan Project Lead, IoE Director of Operations, and various UCL stakeholders, including:
• Technical Compliance Manager
• Regional Directors, Managers, and Property Managers
• Health and Safety Team
• Approved Contractors
